• Question: can you treat different diseses not just cancer with radiotherapy

      Radiotherapy can be used for other conditions other than cancer but it is not very common (and less common than it used to be). Radiotherapy treats the patient with ionizing radiation (x-rays and other types of radiation) which itself can cause cancer. So the benefit of the radiation exposure has to outweigh the risk of exposing the patient to radiation (this question has to be checked each time a patient has a diagnostic x-ray, CT scan or nuclear medicine procedure or is referred for radiotherapy). Because cancer can be fatal, the benefit is often greater than the risk. For non-malignant conditions this is true less often.
