No not currently but how fun would it be to though. I hope that maybe the research into vascular problems I am involved in currently and in the future may help and improve treatment for patients, which would be a very positive thing to see.

We are always trying to come up with something new that will help treat people with skin diseases, so hopefully one of our ideas will have a significant impact one day!

Yes! I don’t know if you’ve read my profile but right now I’m working on inventing new ways to detect cancer. You may have heard of a patent, which is the legal document you file when you invent something new? I’m filing one of those this week.

I have designed and built a system to heat or cool and to keep a stable temperature of an object inside an MRI scanner. We are using post mortem brains and we want to keep the conditions as close to inside the body as possible so it has to be kept at 37 degrees Celsius. We couldn’t use a normal heater or refrigerator as they normally contain magnetic metals in them and they would get pulled into the MRI scanner.

No I haven’t invented anything. I made a small MRI scanner as an undergraduate but that wasn’t new. The research I have done has been measuring things to compare to models. This sometimes involves making experimental setups to be able to measure what you want in the right conditions. I am unlikely to invent something significant in my current job but other people in the NHS do patent ideas and/or make a private company to market their device. A colleague of mine is writing plan checking software and hoping to be able to market it to other radiotherapy centres.
