A lot of my time because science is a large part of my job every day at work and currently working towards my masters means a lot of time is spent study/researching/learning about science.
I usually work 9-5ish Monday to Friday, but outside of that I am usually thinking about something sciencey, and I enjoy watching science shows and stuff so that kinda counts. During school and university though I spent a lot of time studying.
I work in science, so all my working hours are doing it – although some of that can be doing ‘normal’ things like paperwork that take away from the sciencey bits. If still have a problem at the end of the day though, it will kick around in the back of my head until I’ve solved it – I had one of these on Friday and it’s been floating around the back of my mind all weekend, so now I need to go back and try to solve it for good so it stops bugging me!
Looking back on life, from when I went to University until I had kids it was a lot. It was nearly all my non-sleeping, non socializing time. I worked late at work to get things done, I spent evenings and weekends on my studying to prepare portfolios (written work) and revise for exams.
Now that I have kids, (and I achieved State Registration) my work science stays at work. I can’t bring home any patient stuff to work on (confidentiality issues and I don’t have the computer systems/network links at home). If I need to read papers or write reports I could do that at home but that’s not very much at the moment. However I want my kids to love science, so I am always pointing out ‘physics in action’ and asking them questions about how things work. I love listening to science programmes on the radio (vintage I know, but don’t knock it till you’ve tried it – try BBC radio 4 podcasts). I love science museums and doing outreach stuff like this. I want to know how things work so will investigate or do an online search. Science is always with me.
Whilst I was studying, it was nearly all of my time. Now I work about 9-6 from Monday to Friday but it can be a bit longer and include the weekend as well.
