My dad was a chemistry teacher so he was thrilled! I didn’t really ‘first tell them’ though: I’d always liked science subjects at school so I just started going more and more in that direction.

I think my parents always knew I would end up in a job in science as I loved it from such a young age and they just want me to do something that makes me happy- which being a scientist does 🙂

They were very happy, they know I love science so they were happy knowing I’d be doing something I am passionate about

They were very pleased that I had been selected to be a medical physics trainee on the (then) Grade A training scheme at my first choice Southampton. I expect they were pleased that I had a paid training place and I would be close to home (parents and in-laws in Southampton) as we had just come back from living in USA.

They were very proud as it is a respected and well payed profession. They were also a bit confused as they didn’t quite understand what I was doing half the time.
