MRI allows us to see inside the body and gain much more information than any other imaging technique such as x-ray or ultrasound. These can tell you that you have a lump inside your body and where it is, but MRI can tell you what the lump is, whether it’s fat, water or cancerous. For this reason, MRI is a very powerful tool for diagnostics.

I am interested in iron because as we get older, the amount of iron in our brains increases and is linked to a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. The neurons in the brain require a small amount of iron to function properly. Too much iron can damage the neurons which negatively affects the brains ability to process information and store memories.
